Birdsong Mindfulness Walks

Slow Listening in Nature

Birdsong Mindfulness invites you to step out of autopilot and into the present moment by slowing your pace and opening your senses.

These walks are rooted in mindful awareness, a form of practice where attention gently rests on the sounds around you, the rhythm of your steps, and the simple experience of being here now.

What is a Birdsong Mindfulness Walk?

Birdsong walks began with a simple discovery: the quality of attention needed to find a bird in a tree: still, listening, unhurried, is almost identical to the quality of attention cultivated in meditation. You slow down. You look up. Suddenly the world has more in it than you noticed before.

Birdsong walks are a form of mindfulness practice guided by listening. By slowing down and paying attention to birds and natural soundscapes, participants learn to cultivate attention, curiosity, and presence. No birdwatching experience is required; only a willingness to slow down and notice. These walks are an invitation to practice that kind of attention, together, in the parks of Barcelona.

  • Rather than focusing on steps, distance, performance, or identifying every bird species, this practice invites you to notice how you’re moving, breathing, and hearing in the here and now. Each sound, shift in pace, or breath becomes an opportunity to return to awareness instead of distraction.

You don’t need meditation experience or knowledge about birds. Curiosity and a willingness to slow down are enough.

  • Walking offers a gentle way into mindfulness through movement, making it accessible for people who find stillness challenging.

Birdsong and natural sounds provide an ever-changing, living anchor for attention. They invite listening without effort, helping awareness settle naturally into the present moment. There’s nothing to create or imagine. The environment is already doing the work.

Together, walking and listening support a quality of attention that is relaxed, embodied, and grounded.

  • A slow, gentle pace — this is not a fitness walk or a hiking activity.

    • Short, simple guidance offered at the beginning and at natural intervals

    • Long stretches of shared silence

    • Birdsong, breath, and body sensations used as anchors for awareness

    • Space to walk at your own rhythm, pausing whenever you need to

There's no "right" way to experience the walk. You're welcome to notice whatever arises — sounds, sensations, thoughts, or simply the act of moving through a place. The birds are here. So are you.

  • Birdsong Mindfulness Walks take place on Sundays via Meetup. They are free to join, with an optional donation suggested at the end to support the cost of organising.

🌿 Birdsong Mindfulness Walks - Frequently Asked Questions

Here Aware offers two kinds of outdoor experiences: Birdsong Walks, which are slow, mostly silent mindfulness practices guided by sound and breath; and Social Birdwatching, which are community birdwatching outings focused on observation, curiosity, and learning to identify birds together. Both move slowly — but for different reasons.

  • Here Aware offers two kinds of outdoor experiences.

Birdsong Walks are slow, mostly silent mindfulness practices guided by breath, listening, and presence in nature.

Social Birdwatching is a relaxed community walk focused on observing birds, learning how to identify them, and sharing curiosity together.

Both move slowly — but for different reasons.

  • Neither. Both Birdsong Walks and Social Birdwatching events move slowly — Birdsong Walks because stillness supports mindfulness, and Social Birdwatching because birds require patience and quiet observation. Comfortable shoes are all you need.

  • It depends on the event. Birdsong Walks use birdsong as an anchor for mindfulness — the focus is on presence and listening, not identification. Social Birdwatching events are amateur birdwatching outings where we do look for and identify birds together, share field guides, and enjoy the company of other curious observers. Both are beginner-friendly.

  • Not at all.

The walks are designed for beginners and curious people alike. Gentle guidance will be offered along the way — all you need is a willingness to slow down and listen.

  • It depends on the type of walk.

Birdsong Mindfulness Walks are mostly silent, as they are guided meditation walks focused on listening, breath, and presence in nature. There will be light guidance at times and moments of shared stillness. Silence is an invitation — not a rule.

Social Birdwatching Walks are relaxed and conversational. We will talk, share observations, and learn together. At times we may lower our voices or pause quietly so we don’t spook the birds.

  • You’re always welcome to walk at your own pace.

The group naturally stretches and re-gathers, and there’s no pressure to keep up or slow down for anyone else

  • Comfortable walking shoes, water, and weather-appropriate clothing for both of the walks.

For Social Birdwatching walks: If you have binoculars or a bird guide, you’re welcome to bring them — but they’re not required.

  • The easiest way to stay in the loop is to join the Here Aware WhatsApp group, where upcoming walks, Social Birdwatching events, and other announcements are shared first.

  • We begin together at the scheduled time to settle into the practice.

If you arrive late, you’re welcome to quietly join when you find the group, but it may take a few minutes to locate us.

If possible, please text me via Whatsapp at least more than 30 minutes before the event so I can share a live location pin. My phone number is on the Meetup description and the email reminders.

  • Light rain can be part of the experience, and we’ll choose routes with mostly concrete paths.

If there’s heavy rain, strong wind, or storm alerts, the walk will be cancelled for safety reasons.

  • Yes. All ages and genders are welcome, as long as you’re comfortable walking slowly.

  • Most experiences are free to join, with a donation suggestion to help cover the cost of organising — things like location permits, materials, and time.

For Social Birdwatching events, field guides and other birdwatching tools are sometimes available to purchase on the day if you'd like to take something home. You're always welcome to come without contributing — participation is never conditional on payment.

  • Yes! I’m open to this and I genuinely welcome it 🌿

If you’re a mindfulness teacher in training or a qualified mindfulness teacher and feel aligned with the pace and spirit of these walks, you’re invited to reach out. I’m happy to explore co-leading or occasionally offering the space for you to guide a walk.

We’ll have a brief conversation beforehand to make sure expectations, structure, and group safety are clear, and that the experience remains slow, spacious, and accessible for everyone.

  • Yes — many participants come on their own. These walks are designed to be welcoming and comfortable whether you arrive alone or with friends.

  • Most walks last around 60–90 minutes, moving slowly with pauses for listening and reflection.
